Strengths:
Affordable - At around $400 depending on where you buy it, the Eclipse 1100 is one of the most affordable elliptical trainers on the market. And with magnetic resistance, 8 levels of resistance and heart rate monitor, you get a lot packed into a small price
Attractive Console - The LCD console is a lot better than you'd expect for this price. It shows speed, distance, time, odometer and approximate calories burned.
6 User Programs - If you tend to get bored easily, you'll appreciate the 6 built in workout programs. (3 for speed and 3 for resistance levels)
Weaknesses:
The stride length is only 15" which is on the smaller side (most higher end ellipticals give you a stride length of 16-18" which ensures your leg muscles get fully worked.).
Also the warranty only lasts for 1 year. For the price this is better than most department store ellipticals which usually give you 90 days. Then again, 1 year isn't long and does give you an idea of the quality of parts used.
While user reviews have been positive, most of them do mention having to fix this elliptical in one way or another. And there have been problems with the flywheel coming loose.
Conclusion:
The Eclipse 1100 is definitely a budget elliptical trainer. While it probably won't stand up under heavy and frequent use, considering the price, it's a decent value. For under $400 you get an elliptical with magnetic resistance, 6 built-in programs, 8 resistance levels and a decent console.
For a few hundred more, you can get a Schwinn or even a Nordic Track with longer strides, more workout programs, longer warranties and better construction.
