A Detailed Review of the Horizon EX 55 Elliptical Trainer
Strengths:
Magnetic Resistance - Magnetic resistance uses magnetic pull to create the resistance in your workout. The eddy current brake provides a smooth and quiet ride.
Upper Body Workout Arms - Get a total body workout with the upper body workout arms.
Narrow Distance Between Footplates - The Horizon EX55 ellipticals offers a very narrow distance between the pedals which can make it especially comfortable for smaller framed people. This can reduce strain on your hips.
18" Stride - This is a very good stride length for this price point. Many cheaper ellipticals will only give you a 14-15" stride length so this is a great value. A longer stride length helps you work your leg muscles more fully and gives you a better workout overall.
Good Reviews - The Horizon EX 55 received a "Best Economy Buy" from Consumer's Digest and has also rated fairly well with users. Consumer's Digest says
"The EX-55 is surprisingly fluid, solid and well-appointed for beginners...a good all-around feel at a low price"
This is an economy elliptical and isn't generally recommended for heavy use. The user weight capacity is fairly light at only 250 pounds which could affect stability when you pick up your pace.
Also, the console is not backlit which can make it hard to read depending on the lighting in your workout area.
Bottom Line: Recommended If You're On A Budget
The Horizon EX55 elliptical is a great economy buy offering narrow footplates (which can be easier on the hips), 18" stride length and solid reviews. For the money it offers good value and is a great alternative to the Icon models (Proform, Nordic Track, Weslo).
It wouldn't be recommended for heavier users or seasoned athletes, especially considering the lower user weight capacity.
