Schwinn Elliptical Trainer:
A Review of Schwinn Crosstrainers & Where To Find Them At A Discount
Strengths:
Magnetic ECB Eddy Current Brake Resistance - Magnetic resistance is currently the best resistance to have (although most ellipticals use magnetic resistance). The eddy current brake provides a smooth, quiet ride without a lot of jumps or starts that you may find on other budget models.
Articulating Footplate - The articulating footplate follows the natural motion of your foot and supports your heel throughout the entire stride motion which gives a smoother, more comfortable feel.
Lengthy Warranty - Schwinn machines come with decent warranties compared to many other elliptical brands. Frames are covered from 15 to 30 years, parts for 2 - 3 years, electronics for 1 - 2 years and labor / wear items for 6 months - 1 year.
18" Stride - Some cheaper ellipticals offer stride lengths of 14 or 15". The 18" stride gives you a smoother, more comfortable ride and helps ensure you get more out of your workout. The Schwinn 460 also offers a variable stride of up to 26" which is incredible.
Highly Rated - The Schwinn 418 (now discontinued) was rated a 'Best Buy' by a popular leading consumer magazine. These ellipticals also rate very well with users at Amazon.
Weaknesses:
While these ellipticals are well made, they are still economy machines without a lot of fancy bells and whistles. You don't get the workout programs, iPod ports or incline that you get with other brands.
If you want a similarly priced brand with incline and more workout tools, you may want to check out the Nordic Track elliptical lineup first
Summary: Recommended
If you're looking for an affordable elliptical, made by a solid name in exercise equipment, Schwinn elliptical trainers give you great design for a very reasonable price.
They offer great value for economy elliptical trainers with decent stride lengths, good warranties and high expert and user ratings. They're also a great choice if you're looking for a budget alternative to the ICON models.
