Horizon Elliptical Trainer Review:

A Review of Horizon Fitness Ellipticals & Where To Find Them At A Discount
2) Long Stride Lengths For More Effective Workouts - Horizon crosstrainers offer varying stride lengths ranging from 18" up to 20" - which are much better than standard 14-16" stride lengths you often find in similarly priced units.

A longer stride length more accurately mimics your body's natural motion and it feels more comfortable when exercising.

It recruits more leg muscles into your workout which means a more effective workout with more calories burned.

3) Oversized Pivoting Foot Pedals For More Comfortable Workouts - Horizon home ellipticals have oversized footpedals with traction grooves to reduce slipping.

Foot pedals also tend to be placed closer together which can reduce the strain on your joints and offer a more natural feel. Most come with pivoting foot pedals which follows the motion of your ankle and again reduces the strain on your joints.

Horizon elliptical trainers are produced by Johnson - a well known name in the business that also owns names like Matrix and Vision.

They are the 4th largest maker of fitness equipment in North America and have been making equipment for over 20 years.

Horizon produces a range of economy to mid-priced elliptical trainers that pack some decent build and design value into the price.

How do they stack up against the competition?  Here's a review to help you decide.

Strengths:

1)   Bargain Prices - One of the best things about Horizon units are that they are on the low-priced side considering what you get.

Many units are priced around $1000 and under. And yet most are built much better than your average $600 department store unit with sturdier bases and more advanced consoles.

Horizon Fitness Elliptical Reviews:

4) Advanced Consoles with mp3/iPod Ports & Speakers - Horizon consoles are bright and easy to read - most are backlit. This is great if lighting in your exercise area is limited.

Some units even come with mp3/iPod hookups, built-in workout fans and speakers.  While this is another thing that is becoming more common in the elliptical market, these luxuries can make your workout a lot more enjoyable.

5) Positive User Reviews - User reviews of Horizon ellipticals are very positive. As of this writing the average Horizon elliptical rating was 4 out of 5 stars.

Many users liked the solid and smooth feel of their units as well as the affordability of the ellipticals (many are under $1000). They also like the quiet operation - and after trying several of the new Horizon models recently we have to agree. These are surprisingly quiet for entry-level ellipticals.

Weaknesses:

While Horizon does have a good reputation, at this price point - it's a crowded market. There's a lot of competition - and many similarly priced brands like Nordic Track give you more bells and whistles in terms of tracking tools, fitness programs and advanced consoles (although Horizon is getting better in this area).

Summary:

Horizon is a proven name with a good reputation for building solid value ellipticals. With longer stride lengths, oversized pivoting foot pedals, bright, easy-to-read consoles and iPod/Mp3 ports, they pack some great value into a bargain price.

They also rate well with users and are even adding upgrades like power incline and workout fans into their new units (like the AT1201).

While they are not commercial grade machines,  if you're looking for an affordable, strong alternative to the ICON brands (Weslo, Image, Reebok and Proform), you'll probably be very happy with a Horizon.
