Nordic Track Elliptical Trainer:

A Review of Nordictrack Ellipticals & Where To Find Them At A Discount
Incline is a feature that is usually only found on $3000 commercial models. (Note that incline is only found on certain models like the ASR 1000, Audiostrider 800 and Audiostrider 990).

2) Improved Stride Lengths For A More Effective Workout - While many of the older Nordictrack models offered 15-16" stride lengths, the new models are coming with 18" - 20" stride lengths. This is a huge improvement as it helps work your leg muscles more fully - burning maximum calories.

The Nordic Track A.C.T. even comes with a 22" stride - one of the longest stride lengths on the market. A longer stride also makes for a more comfortable feeling elliptical motion - especially if you're taller or really like to pick up the pace during your workout.

3) Folding To Save Space - Several of the new Spacesaver Nordic Track ellipticals fold up for easy storage and movement (see the Audiostrider 990, E5 Si or Audiostrider 800).

While fairly common to find with treadmills - it's hard to find an elliptical that folds up. It's a handy feature for smaller workout areas like condos or apartments.

4) Built In Speakers with iPod / MP3 Hookup - Several of this year's new models come with built in speakers and iPod / mp3 plug in ports.  You just plug in your iPod and listen to your favorite music or audiobook through the built-in speakers. This can make your workouts a lot more fun and enjoyable.

5) iFit Card Readers For More Interactive Workouts - iFit workout cards offer 8 weeks of personal trainer workouts (per card).  You insert the card directly into the elliptical console and the program will automatically adjust your speed and incline to fit the workout's goals (i.e. weight loss, performance, etc.)

You get the voice of a personal trainer talking you through your workout. Nordic Track has even teamed up with Jillian Michaels (the personal trainer on The Biggest Loser) to make iFit cards with her coaching you through Jillian's specially designed workout. It's like having a personal trainer in your machine (without the extra cost).

6) Improved Designs Give More Workout Variety - Several models like the A.C.T. come with adjustable stride lengths.

Having different stride lengths can help you target different muscle groups and trouble spots. It can also be ideal if you have multiple users as everyone can find a stride that's right for them.

Nordic Track models offers both front flywheel and back flywheel designs. And the latest - the Nordic Track A.C.T. -  is built with the dual side flywheel design which puts the foot pedals close together which some people find more comfortable.

Weaknesses:

On most ellipticals the warranty covers 1 year on parts and labor with extended warranties available. We would have liked to see a longer parts warranty on the models, however at these price points, one year is pretty much the norm - if not better than many department store models.

Also, the economy units (under $800) are not recommended for heavy or frequent use. They just won't hold up as well over the long term. We would look to the higher end models for a higher quality, longer lasting machine.

Nordic track is owned by ICON Health and Fitness, one of the largest fitness equipment makers in the world. (They also own the Proform, Reebok, Epic and Weslo brands).

Nordic Track is ICON's high end brand and Nordic Track Elliptical Trainers offer a better quality of construction than other ICON models.

In the past 2 years, they've also greatly improved their overall design, feel and warranty. Plus you'll also find several deluxe workout features added to the new models.

Strengths:

1) Quick Ramp / Incline For Better Crosstraining - Incline (not the same as resistance) changes the slope of the elliptical motion, working different sets of muscle groups.

This gives you a more effective crosstraining workout and helps to avoid overtraining.
